Annual Conference, Center for Oceans Law and Policy June 26-27, 2014

The 38th Annual Conference of the Center for Oceans Law and Policy will be held in Bergen, Norway, 26-27 June. Tentative topics include Changing Fisheries in the Arctic and Continental Shelf Petroleum Issues

The Primary Sponsors are the University of Bergen Faculty of Law, the Center for Oceans Law and Policy, and the Law of the Sea Institute of Iceland.

Workshop: LOS in the 21st Century, University of Kiel, Germany, March 7, 2014

On March 7 through 9, 2014, the Walther Schücking Institute for International Law at Kiel University in Germany will convene a workshop titled "Law of the Sea in the 21st Century: Stalemate or flexibility to address new challenges?" The event will primarily feature German, Dutch and Danish experts in international law addressing options for policy makers to address future issues in Ocean Governance.

20th Anniversary of the International Seabed Authority

November 16, 2014 will mark the 20th anniversary of the coming into force of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. it will also mark the 20th anniversary of the founding of the International Seabed authority in Kingston, Jamaica in 1994.

Planning is underway to develop an appropriate event to celebrate the occasion.

Sea Bed Mining 2014: An Industry Summit in London

Mining IQ has organized an industry summit to address issues related to deep seabed mining. The event will include a day-long event on March 24th, followed by a two day series of panels, presentations and other events.

The conference will be held in London at the Kensington Close Hotel. The day-long "Legal Framework Focus Day" will be held on March 24th, 2014 and the Conference itself will be held on March 25-26.

Parties and Non-Parties to the LOS Convention

There are only 14 coastal states that have not yet joined the LOS Convention. In addition to the United States the list includes:

  • Libya
  • Venezuela
